Finding a Tech Job in China After Studying Abroad

When I decided to return to China after my PhD, everyone had opinions. 'You'll make more in the US!' 'China's tech scene is too intense!' 'Why would you leave?'

But I had my reasons, and I'm glad I came back. Here's what the job search was actually like:

Timing matters. The two big hiring seasons are fall (秋招, September-November) and spring (春招, March-May). I started applying 6 months before graduation.

Platforms I used: - 牛客网 (Nowcoder) for tech interview prep - 脉脉 for networking - Boss直聘 for job listings - LinkedIn for international companies in China

The interview process was intense — multiple rounds of coding, system design, and behavioral interviews. My US experience was valued, but I also needed to demonstrate knowledge of the Chinese tech ecosystem.

Salary negotiation was different. Base salary might be lower than US, but factor in cost of living, 13th-month pay, stock options, and the fact that you're closer to family.

The biggest adjustment was work culture. The pace is fast. Meetings happen on WeChat at all hours. But the energy and growth opportunities are incredible.

My advice: start early, network aggressively, and don't compare your China salary to US numbers — compare your quality of life.
