After arriving in the US, you may need to transfer money from China to pay tuition and living expenses. Here are several common methods.

Common Transfer Methods

Transfer Method Comparison

Bank Wire Transfer

Most traditional method. Transfer directly from a Chinese bank to your US account. Fees around $15-45, takes 1-3 business days.

Alipay/WeChat International

Convenient and fast, but lower per-transaction limits. Good for small amounts.

Wise (formerly TransferWise)

Great exchange rates, transparent fees. Recommended for large transfers.

Carrying Cash

You can bring up to $10,000 into the US without declaring. Amounts over $10,000 must be declared at customs.

⚠️China has an annual foreign exchange limit of $50,000 equivalent per person. Plan ahead if you need more, or pay tuition directly through school channels.

💡Consider transferring money in batches when exchange rates are favorable rather than one large transfer. Use a rate-tracking app to monitor rates.
