US Phone Plan Guide

How to choose a carrier, get a SIM card, and pick the right plan after arriving in the US.

Last updated: January 10, 2026

A phone is one of the most essential tools after arriving in the US. With a US phone number, you can receive verification codes, use navigation, and contact your school and new friends.

Prepaid vs Postpaid

Plan Type Comparison

Prepaid

No credit check needed, ready to use immediately. Great for new arrivals. $30-50/month.

Postpaid

Requires SSN or credit check. Better signal and service, but requires a contract. $40-70/month.

💡We recommend starting with a prepaid plan, then switching to postpaid once you have an SSN and credit history.

Recommended Carriers

Carrier Comparison

T-Mobile

Good coverage, international roaming packages, some plans include free calls to China. Top recommendation.

AT&T

Wide coverage, reliable signal. Prepaid brand Cricket is great value.

Mint Mobile

Uses T-Mobile network, cheapest option (from $15/month). Must buy 3-12 months upfront.

China Telecom Americas/CMLink

Dual US-China number, keeps your Chinese number active. Great for receiving Chinese verification codes.

How to Get Set Up

1
Choose carrier and plan

Pick based on your budget and needs.

2
Visit a store or buy online

Bring your passport to a carrier store to buy a SIM card. You can also order online.

3
Install the SIM card

Insert the new SIM card into your phone and follow activation instructions.

4
Set up your phone

Download essential apps: Google Maps, WhatsApp, your school's app, etc.

⚠️If your phone is from China, make sure it supports US carrier bands. Most recent phones do, but check on the carrier's website beforehand.
